129 kilometers away from Bariloche, south along paved National Route 40, running alongside Lakes Gutierrez, Mascardi and Guillelmo and crossing rivers Villegas, Foyel and Quemquemtreu, you get to El Bolson nestled at the foot of Mount Piltriquitrón, on the banks of the Quemquemtreu River.
Mentioning El Bolsón, undoubtedly implies visiting, among other things, the Artisans Fair, where a significant number of craftsmen, gather to trade a wide range of their products. Pottery, wool, leather and metal works, dry flowers, jams, fresh vegetables, knives and candles as well as cheeses and home brewed beer, are for sale in the fair.
If you drive your own car, just 4 km away from the centre of town, is a rock form that resembles the head of an indio. It is nicely set in the mountains with a gorgeous view along the valley of Rio Azul. The “Cabeza del Indio” (Indian’s Head) is best seen if you hike until you see the rock from the back side. If you head to Cabeza del Indio, you should make a stop at Mirador del Azul, giving you a fine view of the valley of Rio Azul.
El Bolsón is part of the parallel 42º Andean Region, which also includes the district of El Hoyo, referred to as the National Capital of Fine Fruits and hosts the Argentina´s National Fine Fruit exhibition in January, Lake Puelo National Park, where the breathtaking Lake Puelo for which this park has been named, stands, Epuyén, Cholila, and El Maitén. The valleys interconnecting these communities are framed by the Andes Mountain Range and beautiful rivers, lakes and creeks surrounded by native forests.
Once in El Maiten, depending on the time of the year, you can take “La Trochita” (which means literally "The Little Narrow Gauge"), The Old Patagonian Express, or visit the old workshop that keeps The Trochita alive. It runs through the foothills of the Andes between El Maiten and Esquel.
The Artisans Fair opens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 17:p.m.
